Facebook reaching new heights

facebook_picBehold, the great and powerful nation of Facebook. We have more citizens than any other social service in the history of mankind. We can solve mysteries, save lives, and dispense personal information about any of our citizens with the click of a mouse. We have ballooned into a social organization the likes of which have never been seen on this planet. And there is nowhere to go but up.

With the advent of the $10 laptop in the country with the second largest population on this planet, there is sure to be another explosion in the number of Facebook users. Many who subscribe but never check in, even more who rely on the service exclusively to plan their entire social itineraries. And yet, nobody seems quite sure what’s next for the social networking giant.

This blog post from ZDNet poses an interesting question – does Facebook (and other sites like it) need some type of governing body? Or will the general community continue to police the service perfectly fine on their own?

Of course, the underlying question there quickly turns to something along the lines of this: If 200 Million Facebook users can govern themselves, come up with their own set of acceptable rules and police users that don’t want to comply… does anybody really need a “governing body”?

I’ll save the anarchy talk for another post (actually… no, I won’t), but for now, think about this: Facebook has more registered users that the population of every country on the face of the Earth besides China, India, the United States and Indonesia, ahead of Brazil, Japan and Russia. It’s amazing just how many people are so connected, and just how powerful we could become.
