America’s First 4G phone: Sprint’s EVO

I left home later than usual today to get my car fixed and I passed by the Sprint store in Framingham, MA. This was around 8am. There was a line about 15-20 people deep already with the store opening at 10am. Then it hit me… the EVO was being released today!

So I dropped off my car, and waited for a loaner. While waiting, I decided to pull up the Sprint website to look at pricing… $200 with a 2-year contract, $70/mo for 450min, unlimited data and unlimited mobile to mobile… add $10/mo for 4G service, another $30 for tethering and you are looking at a $110/month bill! Is it really worth it? I think so! If you can charge your phone multiple times during the day, or keep it plugged in, not only can you talk on the phone, you can use your phone as a wi-fi hub! The extra costs are actually cheaper than getting a USB broadband card (around $40-60/mo)… not to mention the EVO is at least 5 times faster than the broadband card running 3G.

Will I be getting one? We’ll see how the new iPhone and Verizon’s 4G plans pan out. Sprint doesn’t have 4G in Boston yet, so I have some time before I start phone shopping again… but it is definitely in my mind!
