Repost: It’s hard being a 1 man crew

This past weekend’s WordCamp Boston reminded me of a post I did awhile back on what gear you bring to conferences. I now have a full carry-on luggage full of cables, mixers, lights, stands, etc. So I ask this same questions again: If you are a 1 man crew, how do you manage to do it? What gear do you bring? How are you carrying it? And does anyone know of a good chiropractor?

As I wait here in the media room, I look around at a lot of people who represent different blogs and companies, trying to report what is going on in the video game world. People have some high-end cameras, video cameras and a crew of 2, 3, or even 4 people. But what if you are only a 1 man crew? You carry everything with you, your laptop, netbook, camcorder, voice recorder, shotgun mic, camera, 2 additional lenses, back up cables, chargers, portable media storage, food and water. Is there a bag big enough for all of this without hurting your shoulders? No way!

It is a weekend like this where I am very excited about reporting the newest games, interviews with companies and just being able to experience the raw nerdgasam. But when it is also work, I know I am going to be exhausted by the end of the weekend I guess it comes with the job… the long hours, the video and picture editing and knowing your stuff.

If you are a 1 man crew, how do you manage to do it? What gear do you bring? How are you carrying it? And does anyone know of a good chiropractor?

Conferences, Meetups, and LANs Oh My!

As I stated earlier, I have been neglectful due to real work as well as organizing the Beginner’s track for WordCamp Boston. Check out the new site and don’t forget to register before December 15th to get the reduced price.

Tonight, I’ll be attending MegaTweetup at Microsoft NERD in Cambridge. This is a huge social media event that is bound to break records and should be an awesome time. I won’t be live blogging but I hope to get some pics. And all proceeds go to Dana Farber Cancer Institute so hurry up!

Finally, there is PAX East 2010. As an avid gamer (PC), and an avid comic reader (Penny Arcade eXpo), I am really looking forward to this 3day event. I’m hoping to get a media pass and live blog a lot of the sessions so stay tuned in March for this awesome 30,000 LAN (local area network) party (LAN parties are people who network computers to play games).

I’ll be on vacation from December 18th to January 3rd so I will be working on updating the site and the look. So stay tuned for the new TNMS!

Yes, I’ve been a neglectful writer. There is no excuse other than my other site is just as time consuming.

In other news, I am trying to help organize the first ever WordCamp Boston. It will be a day full of WordPress issues, support, topics, CMS, SEO and hopefully I’ll be able to give a presentation for beginners (wordpress.com vs. wordpress.org; hosts/servers; plugins; setup) and to have a seat at our own “experts bar” for more hands-on support. If you use WordPress, I would highly advise pre-registering for this event on January 23rd as the price of the tickets will go up at the end of December.
